Marina Recreation & Aquatics Complex Project
The City of Marina is committed to enhancing recreational opportunities for all ages and abilities. Since the 2005 Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan, the community has voiced strong support for a centrally located recreation center featuring an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, and sports courts.
Project History & Community Input
- A 2005 community survey revealed that 85% of residents prioritized an indoor pool and recreation center.
- In 2009, the City developed a strategic plan to unify Marina through recreation and identified a sports complex as a top priority.
- Since 2018, the City has actively engaged the community through outreach events, study sessions, and City Council meetings to refine the project vision.
Project Scope & Development
- The facility will revitalize former military buildings at 2nd Ave. & 9th St., transferred from Fort Ord.
- In 2019, conceptual designs estimated a $14M budget, later expanded to $22Mwith additional features like:
- A two-story connector building
- An elevated indoor track
- A commercial kitchen
- A stand-alone sports pavilion
- Due to rising costs and expanded scope, the estimated budget is now $40M.
Next Steps
At the November 2024 City Council meeting, the City approved moving forward with finalizing designs, coordinating with the Dunes City Park Project, and updating the financial model.
This project will create a state-of-the-art recreation hub to serve Marina and the surrounding community for years to come. Stay tuned for updates!
